The Interview

 

TONY-MIKE:

First of all, congratulations on 43 years of marriage! That’s a remarkable milestone. How did it all begin?

PATRICIA (smiling):

Thank you, Tony. It feels like yesterday. We got married in 1981, in a quiet but joyful ceremony. Since then, it’s been a shared journey of faith, family, and purpose.

GREGORY:

We were young, ambitious, and grounded. What we lacked in experience, we made up for in faith and determination.

 

 

TONY-MIKE:

Your careers both reflect incredible dedication and growth. Greg, yours spans top positions in banking. What shaped your rise?

GREGORY:

Hard work and integrity. From the Central Bank of Nigeria to Afribank and then UBA, I saw every step as a trust to be earned. Studying at Harvard Business School also gave me a broader view of leadership and global standards.

TONY-MIKE:
And after retirement?

GREGORY:
I ventured into manufacturing as a private industrialist. Building something of your own is another kind of service—to your country and legacy. It's about creating value and jobs, even in challenging environments.

 

TONY-MIKE:
Pat, your story through Mobil Nigeria is inspiring. What kept you going in such a competitive field?

PATRICIA:
Excellence and humility. The oil industry is demanding, but I believed in continuous learning. Working as an Economist and Accountant and rising to a Management position, was the result of showing up prepared every single day. Now I run Camomile Consulting, a human resource and training consultancy. Mentorship is my new mission. It’s deeply rewarding.

 

Legacy in Service and Faith

TONY-MIKE:
Faith clearly plays a central role in your lives. How has that shaped your leadership?

GREGORY:
We’re Catholics through and through. I currently serve as the 1st Vice Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Maryland, Lagos. Faith anchors my decisions, both personal and professional.

PATRICIA:
I’m the President of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) at the same parish. In 2019, we co-chaired the Harvest Planning Committee—a huge responsibility. It’s our way of giving back, not just in words, but in active service to the church and community.

 

Their Greatest Collaboration: Family

TONY-MIKE:
What keeps your bond so strong after four decades?

PATRICIA (laughing):

Laughter, respect, and prayer. We don’t always agree, but we listen.

GREGORY:
And we don’t take each other for granted. Marriage, like leadership, requires daily commitment. We also prioritize family dinners, and we're intentional about staying connected with our children and grandchildren.

 “They made our home a haven. It was a masterclass in love and discipline,” says one of their daughters.

TONY-MIKE:
What advice would you give young Nigerians building careers and relationships today?

GREGORY:
Stay honest, stay humble. Quick wins don’t last—character does. Whatever field you’re in, serve diligently.

PATRICIA:
And choose your partner wisely. Life is not a solo act. Whether in business or marriage, values must align. And above all—pray together.

What do you want your legacy to be?

GREGORY:
That we walked with integrity and lifted others as we climbed.
